For those of you who are not friends or family I shall let you know I was born into the Clan of Dunlop. Quite a prolific group in Hawera but over here there is a town as well.

This is the tiny post office in tiny Dunlop where I posted a letter to Pamela Dunlop and got a Dunlop stamp on it!! Hope it actually makes it to my letter box at Waihi beach.
So here’s the thing. My great great grandfather, William Dunlop, lived on Bringan farm just out of Kilmarnock.

Across the Ford from Bringan farm was Craufurdland estate where a young woman called Elizabeth Dalziel lived. Unfortunately not in the castle but in a Crofters cottage with her father and 10 siblings. Her mother had died when she was 14. ( probably in childbirth!!)

So!! Bill and Betty ( that’s my take on what these 2 were really called) decided to get married . In 1854 they were kirked and married at Craufurdland Mains. They immediately set sail for Gippsland in Australia but found the land not suitable for a dairy herd. So got on another boat and arrived in Christchurch in 1855. The rest they say is history.

The village of Dunlop was quaint and old.

Love the bench you are standing beside in the last photo. Deserves a sketch/painting.

Oooooh Dunlop is very quaint and I’m sure that “Bill & Betty” romanticised the ford 🙂 Are there lots of Ayrshire cows around?
Did you get to the kirk and sit in the Dunlop pew? Or see the stained glass window with the Dunlop coat of arms? Or taste some Dunlop cheese? Oh well, if you didn’t, next time – there always needs to be something to look forward to ………. Did you “feel” anything overlooking the farmland, like a sense of “this is where I’m from” or anything like that?

Great watercolors. How cool to visit Dunlop. I’ll keep a look out for a letter addressed to Pamela Dunlop.
