The Stables

The Cromarty Arts Trust own 3 buildings in Cromarty. The first is Ardyne house where we have our ensuite accomodation, the second is the Old Brewery where they hold concerts etc and the third is the Stables which have been converted to allow artists their own working space and a huge gallery space above for live theatre and exhibitions.

The Stables with studios on the ground and large exhibition space above.
The other side of the stables building.

There are about 6 other artists with space in the stables but today there was only one guy, who works with parchment. Apart from introducing ourselves we sort of stuck to ourselves really.

One of the artists works with copper.
This is my lovely minimalist space.
I don’t know why but there is a unicorn on the grass outside the building.
The blue door that leads into the studio spaces.

Later in the afternoon I left the Stables and wandered back to our house. Waiting for some inspiration for what I’m going to do here. Need an epiphany!

  1. Looks like an ideal environment for great artistic inspiration, Go girl!!

“Many cultures attribute unicorns to purity, freedom, health, magic, innocence and mysticism. Unicorn also stands as a symbol of joy and life.” xx

  2. Paul has just reminded me that the unicorn was chosen as Scotland’s national animal.
“In Celtic mythology the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, as well as masculinity and power.”

  3. Hi Pam, how about drawing the whole of the building. Take some rubbings of interesting surfaces. Chuck some paint on a big sheet of paper and work some texture into it with found things …sheeps wool, leaves, draw with a stick into it.Rub a bit of the local earth into it…….go girl!

  4. Good morning Pamela

I attended your sketching/water class workshop at least a year ago, though haven’t seen you since. Live in Athenree.

Been enjoying your letters from wherever you are. Feel compelled to reply today. Though hadn’t thought that I would until now.

Surely the unicorn has found just the right grass to graze upon? 🥴 and not being a local (as per you) stands out in any environment I suppose.

Sympathising with your desires for inspirational enlightenment. Having to put one’s foot down on the “do it now” pedal when creativity isn’t necessarily juiced up to go.

I’ve always appreciated your ability to capture the essence of the ordinary from your monthly postings. I’m thinking that moving around your environment as much as you can will eventually capture your artist’s eyes and gift you what you crave.

The picture of the barren spot in the studio almost thrums with intimidation. I’m guessing you’ll eventually sit there brimming with bunches of paper in your hands, many sketches jostling for attention.

Keep following the active lead and sketch away. I’m sure you’ll find that collectively images and ideas…inspiration will follow.

After so much travel, writing your blog and attending to so much detail, has left you wound up concentrating on the practical decisions?

Maybe giving space to a meditative moment can give you a sense of calm for your work and creativity to flow?

Writing from the Bistro area of my garden. Sunshine, umbrella up, sheltered from that pesky westerly wind, gusting frequently as the morning moves closer to midday.

Writing in my diary, listened to radio nz for awhile. Blackbirds landing in front of me, rummaging through the pebbles (mix called Hokey Pokey) and hoping come spring and summer that they won’t eat more than their share of the strawberries I’m nurturing again for their sweetness.

Wishing you inspiring times and lovely people to enjoy this with. Paula 🐩🐩
