Alexandria on the Mediterranean

Two and half hours drive from Cairo to the city of Alexandria. Drove through the Dessert road which now due to irrigation is not always dessert. A big armed forces presence out here too. The airforce and a prison.

We had a guide take us to the Alexandria National Museum. More artefacts.

The head of King Akhenaten.
The incredible colours of these ancient relics blows me away.

Another drive around Alexandria to the catacombs of a wealthy family in the 2nd century AD. Tunnelled into bedrock. Unfortunately the bodies are no longer there due to looters who took all the jewellery off the bodies and left them unwrapped and they were destroyed.

Down into the earth to see the catacombs.
Just a hole for the lowly ones.
A nicer burial for those with dollars.

Notice the Greek influence from the pattern above the door. So the Egyptians who came into Alexandria at this time were foreigners. This was a Roman Greek territory in the 2nd century AD. Very confusing when I’m just getting my head around the Egyptian thing.

The Greek and Roman influence
Diocletian Column and Sphinx.

Couldn’t stand too long in the 40degree heat. This is called Pompey’s Pillar and that’s all I remember.

To the gorgeous hotel and a bit of a siesta. This is the view from our balcony.

Yay!!! The Mediterranean

This little sketch I did while sitting on my bed looking out the French doors.

The balcony across the street.

Till tomorrow.
