Leaving Boston it’s a short trip to Salem. The town of the witch trials in 1692.
I always thought the ‘witches’ were burned at the stake and all were women. I was wrong. There were both men and women and they were hung. There were 20 condemned to death. 19 were hung and one was ‘pressed’. (With a rock).

The memorial to those condemned to hang was a lovely little grassed area with a stone wall around it and stones protruding from the wall with the names of those who died.

Then we walked out into the town of Salem and were visually bombarded by dressed up witches, goths, Harry Potter look alikes and Star wars superstars. It was like being at Disneyland. I felt really sad about this. Those that were killed weren’t witches. I felt they were being disrespected by the actions of others.
On a lighter note the architecture has a subtle change in this area. Cape Cod houses have a distinct roof shape.

Next stop is Portland Maine.

The one thing I’m looking forward to seeing in Portland is the lighthouses. Many islands are off the coast with a wild rocky coastline and at least 12 lighthouses.

Yay! A lighthouse. My favourite..

Not much else to say about Portland except that I’m pleased we came here.

Now on the train to our next destination.
Talk later. Pamela
